ZOVIRAX® (acyclovir) Ointment 5% is a topical (for the skin) form of
the drug acyclovir, which is a treatment for the herpes virus. Each gram of
ZOVIRAX® Ointment 5% contains 50 mg of acyclovir in a polyethylene glycol (PEG)
base. This product is indicated in the management of initial genital herpes and
in the treatment of potential complications of herpes infections in people whose
immune systems are compromised. ZOVIRAX® ointment 5% is available in 15 g tubes.
In controlled clinical trials, mild pain (including transient burning and
stinging) was reported by some patients in both the active and placebo arms.
Local pruritus occurred in a few of these
patients.
