CARDIZEM® CD (diltiazem hydrochloride) is indicated for the
treatment of hypertension and/or angina. CARDIZEM® CD works by relaxing and
widening the coronary arteries, so a greater volume of blood can circulate
through them. This action increases the volume of oxygen-rich blood reaching the
heart, which reduces the symptoms of chest pain (angina). CARDIZEM® CD also
widens arteries in the rest of the body, which reduce blood pressure. CARDIZEM®
CD belongs to a class of antihypertensive drugs known as calcium channel
blockers (CCBs).
In clinical trials of CARDIZEM® CD capsules, and CARDIZEM® SR capsules
involving over 3200 patients, the most common side effects were edema (4.6%),
headache (4.6%) and dizziness (3.5%).
